The Tea :

Let me set the vibe: a serene and safe haven settled in the breathtaking beauty of Santa Marta, Colombia, where Black women from all walks of life come together to embark on a spiritually transformative journey of self-discovery and healing. In September 2022, I finally started a life-changing journey to Santa Marta, Colombia for my very first selfcare retreat. This experience, named The Self Care Retreat, is specifically curated for women of color and provides a safe and nurturing space for healing, self-expression, and personal growth. Centered around the theme of the art of movement, the retreat allowed me to leave my titles at home and tap into my authentic individuality, my sensuality, explore the power of dance, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. From healing workshops to connecting with incredible women, and even challenging myself to travel solo, this retreat was an unforgettable experience that left a profound impact on my life. My time in Colombia was amazing and, I can't even begin to describe the immense sense of empowerment and confidence I gained during the retreat there. From the moment I touched down in Barranquilla, I knew I was in for a timeless experience.

The Art of Movement

At the heart of this retreat was the theme of the "Art of Movement." As someone who struggles with naturally embracing my sensuality and simultaneously throwin’ it in a circle, this experience allowed me to tap into my inner Ciara and set sis free. Seriously though, dancing became a form of liberation, exploring my sensuality and feel comfortable in my skin. It was a powerful experience that showed me the beauty of expressing myself through movement. The Afrocentric dance lessons that I learned were energizing yet nostalgic (reminiscent of my clubbing era at Da Real Ting Café in Jacksonville), while the sensual dancing workshop led by a phenomenal pole dance artist empowered me to embrace my femininity and sensuality unapologetically. That experience was sexy AF and I was inspired to channel my inner Janet Jackson.

Cacao Ceremonies and Beyond

One of the most spiritually enlightening experiences during the retreat was attending a cacao ceremony. Now, I have made raw cacao on an excursion in Cozumel, Mexico but this here was all together different! As I sipped this rich and sacred chocolate, I felt a deep connection to the universe, and ultimately transcended the boundaries of imagination. It was a moment of deep introspection, allowing me to release emotional burdens and connect with my inner self. This was also a celebration of sisterhood with my retreat sisters as we gathered in a circle dressed in all pink; reminding me of the strength we possess within. Genuine connections were formed, and our collective energy was aligned. This ceremony was an awakening, one that left me feeling like a goddess inside and out.

Workshops That Transformed My Soul

This retreat was like a spiritual cleanse that I desperately needed. Every morning, we started off with powerful meditation sessions. These sessions set the vibe for self-reflection and healing. I would say the meditation and workshops were the catalyst of healing because I fully submitted to new practices and breathworks to adopt. I was met with deep undiscovered revelations. With grievances from my father's passing, my sister's and best friend’s departures, and fractured relationships with my mother, sisters, and childhood friends, I needed this. The workshops focused on healing and peace were a lifeline. I released the pain, and found closure. Now, I'm ready to manifest a future filled with love and positivity.

Adventures and Connections

The connections I made with my retreat sisters were also instrumental in my growth. The supportive and uplifting atmosphere on this retreat cultivated a sense of sisterhood and camaraderie that I will forever cherish. We lifted each other up, celebrated our individuality, and embraced our strengths and vulnerabilities together. It was truly a transformative experience to be surrounded by such inspiring and dope women.

Beyond the healing workshops and spiritual ceremonies, the retreat offered additional explorative  activities. We went hiking and tubing at “Don Diego’s” River and even had the opportunity to embrace our inner mermaids and rock-climbers (lol). That South American heat is NO joke, though! To this day, my chest still has a sunburn the shape of my bikini top. But, essentially, these adventures not only brought joy and laughter but also fostered connections with the beautiful souls I encountered. I was initially nervous about making connections because I’m naturally quite and my demeanor is sometimes intimidating for people until they get to know me. I’m also an introvert – well ambivert - so there’s that. But, my retreat sisters was a perfect blend of introverts and extroverts which made for a comfortable and beautiful experience. I was surprise to find other women similar to myself. Each woman came from a unique background, yet we effortlessly bonded, forming a sisterhood that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Getting the Soft-Life Experience

The opportunities for self-care and self-discovery were abundant at this retreat. Whether it was indulging in luxurious spa treatments, practicing yoga on the stunning beaches, or participating in empowering workshops, I felt a deep connection to my femininity and a renewed sense of self-worth. I would be remiss to not sprinkle a few extra luxuries from this retreat. I would describe my incredible experience of indulging in massages in the enchanting treehouse spa amidst the mesmerizing sound of thundering rain. It truly was a top-tier experience, allowing me to fully immerse myself in relaxation and rejuvenation. Not only that, but my bungalow was absolutely top-tier. My roomie and I were fortunate enough to share a luxurious bungalow that featured a breathtaking outdoor shower. It was a true oasis, surrounded by the untouched beauty of Colombia's nature. We were literally centered in nature with a private beach all to ourselves. Being able to wake up and be in the midst of such natural glory was a remarkable experience for me.

Colombian Cuisine and a Dash of Self-Confidence

The culinary delights of Colombia, particularly the pescatarian and vegan meals served at the Gitana Del Mar beach resort, were *chef’s kiss. The shift from my usual American diet was not only delicious but also transformative, leaving a lasting impact on my overall well-being. I honestly didn’t want to go home to American food even though I folded for some fried Oreos weeks after my return. Chef Deivis Gutierrez Cardozo did his big one though! One day, I will begin my vegan journey…

Additionally, the retreat included a Goddess drip style photoshoot, which initially made me feel awkward as I always am when taking profesh pics. However, my retreat sisters hyped me up and helped boosted my confidence, allowing me to embrace my true self and reflect my inner beauty. I was inspired by their effortless confidence and they posed so daring yet dainty. It was a particular technique that was mesmerizing for me to witness that I have sense tried to implement in my photos. I’m a girl’s girl so this moment was similarly on brand and, my retreat sisters ATE this down!

Challenging Myself and Embracing Versatility

One thing that truly pushed me out of my comfort zone was traveling solo to a foreign country and joining a retreat with a group of strangers. It was hands down the best decision I ever made! The support and love I received from my fellow retreaters and the facilitators made me feel like I had found my tribe. Stepping into the unknown not only expanded my horizons but also unleashed a newfound confidence within me. I proved to myself that I am capable of embracing new experiences and thriving in unfamiliar territory. Additionally, I pushed myself to be versatile by wearing multiple wigs, despite my apprehension and initial fears of judgment. I wanted switch up my look based on my outfits exclusively picked for Colombia, but I couldn't shake off the fear of being judged. However, to my surprise, some of my retreat sisters were inspired by my bravery to just be myself and express my style however I desired. It was a powerful reminder that embracing our individuality is a beautiful thing. My roomie even named my go-to jet black buss down wig, “Topanga.”

Post-Retreat Reflection and Growth

As the retreat came to an end, I knew I needed time to reflect and soak in all the vibes. Choosing to extend my stay in Santa Marta both before and after the retreat was a wise decision. It provided me with valuable alone time to process the incredible experiences and decompress. As an introvert, this time for introspection was essential to recharge and ensure a smooth transition back to my normal life. The positive shift in my attitude and demeanor was noticed by my loved ones, who witnessed the transformative impact the self-care retreat had on me. My husband, children, and close friends have all witnessed the best version of me since my return. Taking this time for myself and prioritizing self-care has made me the best version of me, not just for them, but for myself too. This is going to be an annual trip for me. I deserve it, and so does my family. Plus, I can't wait to see what new adventures and experiences await me on my next self-care retreat!

At the end of the day…

My first self-care retreat in Santa Marta, Colombia, was a life-changing experience that allowed me to tap into my sensuality and divine femininity, heal from past grievances, and connect with beautiful souls. The theme of the art of movement empowered me to break free from inhibitions and release my inner Ciara. I truly embraced being me, separate from all the roles I had. Whether it was as a mom, a wife, boss, or clinical researcher, those titles ceased to define me. I simply showed up as my authentic self and prioritized my healing and care. Through meditation, workshops, and a spiritual cacao ceremony, I found spiritual connection and release. The adventures, delicious Colombian food, and supportive retreat sisters added to the magic of the experience. Challenging myself to travel solo and embracing self-discovery brought immense growth and confidence. The retreat's positive impact has been evident in my relationships and overall attitude. I essentially decided to make this an annual commitment, ensuring the best version of myself for my family and loved ones. This self-care retreat has truly transformed me, and I am forever grateful for the empowering and rejuvenating journey it provided. I left Santa Marta with a newfound sense of purpose and a commitment to continue nurturing and prioritizing my own well-being.

Thank you, Shanicia, for reminding me of my worth and unleashing my inner baddie. I will carry the lessons and memories from this experience with me always.
